Donations flow into Albany Therapeutic Riding Center after fire
GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Last week, a fire broke out at the Albany Therapeutic Riding Center, leaving the nonprofit facility in urgent need of supplies. Thankfully, no people or animals were harmed, but the blaze destroyed critical resources needed to care for the center’s horses. Just a week after the fire, the center has seen an outpouring of community support, with donations pouring in to help keep the facility running.
Executive Director Taylor Huntley expressed her gratitude, describing the support as “astronomical.” According to Huntley, the center raised $30,000 within five days. “It’s amazing to see our community come together so quickly,” she said. “This has allowed us to keep the lights on and ensure the horses are cared for.”
Among the contributions, Tractor Supply donated nearly $5,000 worth of supplies, including 180 bags of shavings, buckets, horse treats, and blankets—essential items that were lost in the fire. Huntley noted the generosity of the community, saying, “We’ve received an influx of love and donations. Everything from pitchforks to wheelbarrows has been donated to help the horses.”
Despite the rapid assistance, the center has yet to reopen for its clients. The cleanup process depends on site clearance approval, which Huntley said could take anywhere from one week to six. This uncertainty is weighing heavily on the staff, who are hoping the center can resume operations in time for its annual horse show in mid-December.
“Many of our clients have been told ‘no’ throughout their lives because of physical or mobility challenges,” Huntley shared. “Our mission is to be a place where we can say ‘yes.’ Not being able to welcome them right now is heartbreaking.”
The horses themselves seem to be missing their visitors, with Huntley noting they long for the “snacks and snuggles” that come with their human companions.
The Albany Therapeutic Riding Center continues to rely on donations to fund care for the horses and salaries for staff. Donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/atrcs-fire-recovery-fund
