Sen. Marshall gives full endorsement for Speaker of the House
TOPEKA (KSNT) - 27 News reached out to Senator Roger Marshall to see who he is endorsing for Speaker of the House.
Marshall's Press Secretary Charyssa Parent said he giving his full endorsement to Mike Johnson, R-La., as Speaker of the House in Washington. The Associated Press reported that Johnson has already started the fight for the gavel by shoring up support from his constituents.
On Tuesday, Nov. 12, Johnson stood on the steps of the U.S. Capitol where he said he would work on president-elect Donald Trump's "America First" agenda of securing the border, projecting strength abroad and ending “wokeness and radical gender ideology.”
Johnson said he will be spending the weekend with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida as they prepare for the new year.
The Speaker will be elected through a vote on the first day of the new congressional session. In order to be elected, the candidate must receive a majority of votes from the members of the house.
Johnson found himself the speaker after the former speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted from the position in a historic house vote. McCarthy relied on Democrats to help pass a short-term government funding measure rather than risk a government shut-down, angering many Republicans. The ousting of McCarthy was the first time in history a Speaker was removed in such a motion.
