Pro-Life Senator John Thune Will Become the Next Republican Majority Leader
Senator John Thune, a pro-life Republican from South Dakota, has been elected by GOP lawmakers as the next Republican Majority Leader. He will replace the retiring Senator Mitch McConnell.
Thune defeated Sens. Rick Scott of Florida and John Cornyn of Texas. Scott was eliminated in the first round of ballots cast. He received 13 votes in the first round, while Cornyn got 15 and Thune got 23, and there were two write-in votes.
Thune won 29-24 over Cornyn on the second ballot.
Thune has a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate.

“I think there are issues that people feel deeply about, and they’re profound issues. The issues of life. The issues of family. And I don’t think we can minimize those in the debate,” Thune has said. “For any conservative or any Republican to get elected to office, you have to have the support and hopefully the energetic support of people who care passionately about the social issues. So, they’re important. And we shouldn’t trivialize that.”
“With regard to the economic issues, fiscal issues, I think most social conservatives agree that we want a government that’s smaller, a government that’s responsive and accountable and all that,” Thune told CBN. “But, we also need to recognize that there are important issues that impact the basic glue, the foundation that holds our country together, and that comes down to the family unit. And we can’t ignore those.”
Thune helped lead the fight against a radical pro-abortion amendment in South Dakota that voters recently defeated.
“The demise of pro-abortion Amendment G is an enormous victory for life,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Unborn children will still be protected in the great state of South Dakota thanks to leadership from Sen. John Thune, Rep. Dusty Johnson and Gov. Kristi Noem. Precious boys and girls will live as a result of this vote, and the state will be immensely better off as they grow to fulfill their God-given purposes Voters have rejected placing late-term abortion in the constitution in favor of South Dakota’s life at conception law that protects the lives of women and unborn babies at every point.”
“South Dakota is a beacon for how the pro-life movement can win future ballot measure fights. When the pro-life leaders speak up and expose the lies of the abortion industry, life wins,” she told LifeNews.
