Expert reveals common Xmas tree mistake & says ‘nothing is trashier’ – people feel ‘attacked’ but there’s an easy fix
A DESIGN expert has sparked a fierce debate after revealing a common Christmas tree decoration mistake – so, are YOU guilty of it?
With the big day just around the corner, many Christmas super fans have been busy decking their homes and putting up their festive trees.
But if you’re yet to do the latter, you may want to listen up, as one designer has spilled the beans on an ornament which can go from classy to ”trashy” due to a common error.
Taking to TikTok, the pro, who goes by the name Dylan (@designsbydylanp) shared an easy tip that will instantly elevate your Christmas tree.
”When you hang your ornaments and they have these long strings on it, nothing is trashier, in my opinion, than having that long string like that [hanging from the branch].”
Instead, the whizz advised to place the bauble – or any other festive ornaments – over the branch and wrapping it around the tree until ”it’s snug”.
”This way, that string is not exposed,” said Dylan, explaining this looks better and more neat.
”You can go as deep into the tree or to the very tip of the branch if you want to as well,” the guru said.
But although the pro reckoned this was ”the correct way” of placing the ornaments, people on social media were not so sure – and the now-viral video sparked a fierce debate.
Thousands of viewers flocked to comments to share their thoughts and it was a mixed bag of reponses.
One said: ”The way I felt personally attacked when you said “nothing is trashier”.
”I love the look of a floating ornament as well, but this tip is great! I’m going to try it.”
Someone else agreed, pointing out to a potential issue Dylan had, perhaps, not thought of.
”All I can think of is the nightmare it will be when you undecorate the tree.”
A third chimed in: ”I thought long strings make an icicle effect.”
”nope, like the low hangers, plus most of the stings are glittery or nice ribbons,” a fourth wouldn’t be racing to change the way they deck their tree.
How to look after your real Christmas tree
HERE'S what you need to know if you're buying a real Christmas tree:
First thing’s first: buy a pot (if it doesn’t come in one already).
You’ll need to treat your tree just like a houseplant and give it water and attention.
Make sure the container has good drainage – and it’s a good idea to put something underneath to catch the excess water.
Check the soil everyday to make sure it’s not drying out.
If it feels dry, give it some water. If it still feels moist, leave it alone as too much water can also kill a tree.
Also check the LED bulbs on your tree lights aren’t too hot as they could burn it, and keep your tree away from radiators.
When Christmas is over, try planting it in the garden so you can dig it up and use it again next year.
It’s a good idea to take it out of its pot when you do re-plant it though, as large trees don’t survive well in pots as their roots need space to grow.
But amongst the 1.5million viewers there were also plenty of those who thanked the expert for posting the clip, especially with Christmas just weeks away
”Why have I never thought of that? You’re a genius!’ one exclaimed.
”Lawd have mercy…in all my years it never occurred to me to do this!!! Thank you!!!” someone else wrote.
”Fine this for years and I think it looks so so much better; sometimes people let the decorations hit the branch below the ones it’s hanging on and it just doesn’t look as good,” a fellow Christmas fan agreed with Dylan.
