‘Y2K’ trailer: A24 horror comedy throws it back to the turn of the millennium [Watch]
Remember the Y2K scare, when we were afraid that computers wouldn’t be able to process having a 2 in the year instead of a 1, and which would lead to the collapse of society? That didn’t happen, but what if it did? What if the electronics came to life and tried to kill us? That would be phat, wouldn’t it? That’s the premise of “Y2K,” an A24 horror comedy that the distributor released a trailer for on Wednesday.
“Y2K” is the directorial debut of former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kyle Mooney, who also wrote the script with Evan Winter and appears as a stoner who hangs out with high school kids half his age. The film is set during a New Year’s Eve party which two uncool high school kids (Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison) crash. When the clock strikes midnight and the electronics go “Maximum Overdrive,” they have to try to save their classmates — and the world. The cast also includes Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler, Daniel Zolghadri, Lachlan Watson, Eduardo Franco, Alicia Silverstone, and Fred Durst as himself. (This is the Limp Bizkit frontman’s second A24 movie, after “I Saw the TV Glow.”) Producers include Jonah Hill and “The Bear” creator Christopher Storer.
The film premiered at South by Southwest in March, where it received mixed reviews. However, critics mostly agreed that whatever its flaws may be, “Y2K” is a good time. It opens in theaters on Dec. 6.
