Ty Cobb: Trump pardoning Jan. 6 rioters would be 'tragic'
Ty Cobb, who served as White House attorney during President-elect Trump's first term, said that it would be a "tragic event" if Trump pardoned Jan. 6 rioters.
"I don't think anybody in our history has more tarnished the rule of law than Donald Trump and I don't think it restrains him at all, the concept that he might do that again, I think it's highly possible that he might go forward with these pardons," Cobb told CNN's Erin Burnett.
"I think this would be a tragic event, further demeaning the rule of law to those of us in this country and it's not gonna go unseen around the world," Cobb added.
The Hill has contacted the Trump campaign for comment.
Trump had vowed on the campaign trail to pardon rioters accused of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
“The moment we win, we will rapidly review the cases of every political prisoner unjustly victimized by the Harris regime, and I will sign their pardons on Day 1,” Trump said at a Wisconsin rally in September.
More than 1,500 rioters have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack with some 645 of them sentenced to time in prison and 143 of them ordered into home detention.
Since Trump's presidential victory, some of the rioters have asked for delayed sentencing in relation to cases brought against them after the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, The Hill previously reported.
Hours after Trump won reelection, rioter Christopher Carnell asked a federal judge to delay a hearing in his case because relief from Trump is expected to be imminent. Another rioter, Jaimee Avery, also asked a judge to delay her sentencing after pleading guilty to two counts of parading and picketing at the Capitol.
The judges overseeing both cases denied the requests.
