Bus carrying wedding guests plunges into river in Northern Pakistan, killing at least 14
Foreign media have reported that a bus transporting wedding guests home plunged into a river in northern Pakistan, resulting in at least 14 fatalities.
Al Jazeera reported that the bus veered off the road and fell into the Indus River in the Gilgit-Baltistan region around 1:00 AM local time.
Local officials stated that the passengers were returning from a wedding ceremony when the driver lost control due to excessive speed, causing the bus to skid off the road.
Geo News reported that the bride was the sole survivor of this tragic incident; however, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
According to the Dawn newspaper, rescue teams dispatched to the scene have recovered 13 bodies from the river, while 12 passengers remain missing. Given the cold temperatures in the area, it is feared that the missing individuals may not have survived.
Agence France-Presse reported that the groom’s family had traveled over 500 kilometers from Punjab for the wedding and were en route back home when the accident occurred.
This tragic incident underscores the critical need for stringent road safety measures in Pakistan, particularly in regions with challenging terrains. Ensuring that drivers adhere to speed limits and exercise caution can prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
