First Warning: Coldest air of fall arrives next week
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The First Warning Weather Team is seeing significant signals that the coldest air of the season (so far) looks on track to arrive toward the end of next week .
WHAT: The coldest air of fall with highs in the 50's and 60's and lows in the 30's and 40's.
WHEN: Nov. 20 through the 22.
IMPACTS: Some frost may be possible in the Hill Country if the colder 30's are realized.
The way the timing looks at this point, a cold front will be arriving near or on Tuesday Nov. 19. The front should knock temperatures down from having highs in the 70's and 80's, to highs in the 50's and 60's.
A wet pattern should precede the arrival of the front with rain chances arriving Sunday and continuing through early next week.
Rainfall totals leading up to the colder air do not look to be too impressive with most areas keeping under half an inch of rainfall Sunday through Tuesday.
The wetter pattern that begins toward the end of our 7-day forecast is alluded to in the Climate Prediction Center's 6 to 10 day precipitation outlook.
The colder period to follow shows up in the CPC's 8 to 14 day temperature outlook.
The coldest high temperature we've seen so far this fall in Austin was 73º on Nov. 5.
Our coldest morning low in Austin was 48º the morning of Nov. 6.
Still, with this expected change roughly a week out, we'll be able to get a better handle on the magnitude of the cold and any adjustments to the rainfall expectations ahead of it as we get closer.
