5-year-old boy with autism found dead in Coos County after going missing for 3 days
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A search for a 5-year-old boy with autism who has been missing since Saturday concluded on Tuesday as officials announced that the boy was found dead less than two miles from his home.
"It is with immense sadness that we have to report that missing Joshua McCoy has been found deceased," the Coos County Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook.
CCSO said Joshua was reported missing by his mother on Saturday evening after she said both she and her child went to take a nap at their home on Stage Road in Hauser in the early afternoon, but by the time she woke up at 5:30 p.m., her child was missing.
Local law enforcement teams started searching the surrounding areas on Saturday evening, and "efforts intensified" on Sunday morning as law enforcement used drones and gave out team assignments, with the area being canvased with real-time GPS tracking, according to authorities.
On Monday, more than 60 ground personnel, aerial support and K9 resources from CORSAR, a collaborative search and rescue effort between seven Oregon and California counties, continued the search, according to the sheriff's office.
Officials say Joshua was found dead on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m., approximately 1.6 miles from his home.
"The investigation is ongoing and no additional information will be released at this time," CCSO said.
