Amazon same-day delivery center ready for the holidays
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - As the most wonderful time of year approaches, everyone is looking for the perfect gifts.
Tuesday, KFOR was invited inside one of Amazon’s fulfillment centers that’s now focused on procrastinators, if you will.
It’s a well-oiled machine all designed to get packages out the door and on your doorstep.
"In less than 8 hours, every package is going to get delivered to the customer, with most delivery times being under 5 hours,” site leader Blaine Cooper said.
Amazon’s newest same-day delivery center is rocking and rolling just in time for the holiday season. The 180,000 sq. ft. facility sits near SE 89th St. and I-35 with roughly 70,000 items inside. Their goal is to get 18,000 packages out the door each day.
"We are not only delivering for our own building, but we've started delivering for the other larger Amazon building here in Oklahoma City,” Cooper said.
The process starts when an item is put in one of their machine operated pods, which makes the item available on the website. Those pods follow QR codes on the floor to get where they need to go.
Employees can then pull and pack items as they’re ordered where they follow conveyors before being sorted for delivery. Instead of vans, employees are paid to use their personal cars to deliver them.
"Because we have the individual drivers taking the packages, coming in and picking them up throughout the day, we're able to deliver very quickly,” Cooper said. "This building is going to be a great resource and ensuring that you have the item in time for your need,”.
Cooper said they also analyze data to see what people in the Oklahoma City metro order most to ensure they have those items in stock.
