ACC Roundup - Big Night For Jaden Schutt
Not so much for TJ Power though
In Monday’s ACC Action, Pitt blew past Gardner-Webb 83-64, Notre Dame got by Buffalo 86-77, Virginia Tech slipped past Winthrop 58-52, Virginia handled Coppin State 62-45 and SMU took care of UNC-G, 81-68.
Pitt was cruising in the first half before they hit some doldrums.
Didn’t matter. It wasn’t a big test for Pitt. Ishmael Leggett paced the Panthers with 21. Guillermo Diaz Graham had 10 points and nine rebounds. Papa Amadou only got four minutes off the bench but Cam Corhen continues to play well, with 12 points and six rebounds.
We’re keeping a close eye on Notre Dame. Micah Shrewsberry, in our opinion, is about to turn that program around in a big way.
The Irish struggled a bit against Buffalo but a 24-2 run to open the second half took care of that.
Tae Davis erupted for 27 points and six rebounds while the guards, Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry had 19 each. Burton was close to a triple double with nine rebounds and eight assists.
The Irish were just 5-20 from there point range, however and the bench produced just eight points, all from JR Konieczny.
Virginia Tech struggled more than maybe it should have against Winthrop, but did defend well, holding Winthrop to 27.6 percent from deep and 33.3 percent overall.
Duke transfer Jaden Schutt racked up his best college game yet, hitting 5-10 for threes and 6-11 overall, finishing with 17 points.
However, only one other player finished in double figures, with Toibu Lawal getting 11.
Up the road in Charlottesville, Schutt’s former Duke teammate TJ Power didn’t do quite as well, finishing with just three points on 1-6 shooting against Coppin State. He did have six rebounds, however.
Andrew Rohde sat this one out with a back injury so Dai Dai Ames started at point. He had 13 points and three assists. Elijah Saunders paced the Cavs with 15. It wasn’t a great night but Virginia might have found a point guard.
Wake transfer Boopie Miller paced SMU with 21 points and seven assists against UNC-G. This is the sort of weak early season game that everyone schedules and there’s just not a lot to learn from playing mediocre teams. BJ Edwards kicked in 17 points while freshman big man Samet Yigitoglu finished with 13 points and four rebounds.
In Tuesday’s ACC Action, FSU gets Tarleton State, Syracuse hosts Colgate, Eastern Kentucky visits Littlejohn, Northern Arizona jets over to Stanford and Georgia Tech gets a shot at redemption against Texas Southern after losing to North Florida.
