Two Tottenham stars at risk of suspension after latest yellow card
Ange Postecoglou’s injury list is growing, so the last thing he needs is a suspension to one of his most in-form players, but one Spurs star is now just one yellow card away from a ban.
Rodrigo Bentancur on his way to a suspension
Rodrigo Bentancur has hit some good form of late, and finally appears to be back to his best after a series of injury setbacks over the last 18 months.
The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been pulling the strings in midfield again, has offered Ange Postecoglou’s side composure and creativity on the ball, and got himself on the scoresheet at the weekend in the defeat against Ipswich Town.
But, the Uruguayan picked up a yellow card in that game against Ipswich for an outburst to the referee late on in the game on Sunday afternoon.
That takes him to four bookings for the season, with five the threshold to trigger a one-game suspension. Bookings get wiped out after 19 games, meaning the 27-year-old needs to navigate the next eight games without going in the referee’s book.
Micky van de Ven, currently out injured, is also on four yellow cards, so when he returns from his hamstring strain, the Dutchman will have to be extra careful if he doesn’t want to miss further games.
FA mulling over Rodrigo Bentancur situation
Bentancur, of course, also has the matter of a potential 12-game suspension from the FA hanging over his head, too.
The Spurs man was charged under FA Rule E3 earlier this season after making inappropriate comments in a media interview over the summer, with a racial joke aimed at Heung-min Son causing offence.
If the FA uphold that charge, Bentancur could face at least six games out, with a punishment of up to 12 weeks potentially on the cards.
Archie Gray can benefit from suspensions
Every cloud has a silver lining, and if Bentancur were to pick up a one-game or 12-game suspension, Postecoglou can at least turn to Archie Gray (or indeed Lucas Bergvall) and give the younger players more opportunities in the starting XI.
