Tottenham plan for Cristian Romero revealed amid Real Madrid rumours
Cristian Romero has been continually linked with a move to Real Madrid, and we now know what Tottenham Hotspur intend to do about it.
Cristian Romero is a Real Madrid target
Since joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, Cristian Romero has gone on to establish himself as one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League, if not the world.
The Argentina international has already won Copa America twice with his country, and was influential as the South American side went on to lift the World Cup in 2022.
Domestically, Romero has stepped up to become one of the key leaders within Ange Postecoglou’s squad at Spurs.
But, his performances and growing reputation in the game have led to envious glances being cast his way, and Real Madrid are thought to be keen admirers of the 26-year-old as they look to reinforce their defence.
Apparently, the Spanish outfit made a tentative approach for Romero in the summer, but Spurs refused to entertain the idea and wouldn’t even give Madrid an asking price (Gaston Edul).
Tottenham will not listen to offers for Cristian Romero
The latest on the matter comes from sources at Football Insider, and it sounds like Tottenham will take a similar stance to the one they held in the summer.
It is thought Spurs are “desperate” to keep Romero at the club, and will not accept any offers for the player in January or next summer.
Instead, the club are keen to add more defensive options to Postecoglou’s squad, and have no intentions to weaken their backline by selling a key player.
Selling Cristian Romero would be a small-club move
If Tottenham are serious about becoming a top club and genuinely competing for top honours across the board, they cannot sell Cristian Romero. I know some Spurs fans are a little concerned by his performances this season, but he is a player of the highest quality, and is the kind of defender you build a team around.
