Pedro Porro says Spurs squad must ‘take accountability’ for poor results
One Tottenham Hotspur player has called on his team to take responsibility for their results and do better for the supporters, after the disastrous home defeat against Ipswich Town.
Spurs were woeful against Ipswich
Despite Tottenham’s inconsistency this season, most supporters did not expect Ipswich to cause an upset in Sunday’s clash. The Tractor Boys had failed to register a Premier League win in over two decades and it looked like the perfect opportunity for Spurs to bounce back from their shocking midweek display against Galatasaray.
But Spurs played yet another poor first half, managing only two shots on target and conceding twice, despite dominating possession (Opta Analyst).
While Spurs improved a bit in the second half, it was nothing on their comeback a week before against Aston Villa, with the Lilywhites failing to score from open play and handing Ipswich their first three points of the season, as the sound of boos rang around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And the result has prompted one Tottenham man to call on his team to do more to reward the fans for their support.
Pedro Porro’s Instagram post
Pedro Porro got his first assist of the season in Istanbul and made it two in two matches against Ipswich, but Spurs were defeated in both fixtures.
With Spurs recording so many underwhelming performances this season, Porro has encouraged his team to improve when they return after the international break.
Posting on Instagram after the Ipswich match, he said: “As a team, we have to take accountability for these results. We must come together to be better and will now look forward to coming back stronger after the break.
“The effort you put into supporting us must be reflected in our effort on the pitch and it is something we will never take for granted. See you after the break.”
Spurs must improve, but Porro is not the problem
Spurs have lost another match directly after a Europa League fixture and just before the international break in what appears a problem involving mentality as much as quality, and Porro was singled out yesterday as a key player at fault for losing possession 26 times.
But he actually lost the ball more times against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago (Sofascore), yet was not blasted then, and he seems to be facing a lot of undue criticism when he was the only player who created a chance which led to a goal.
Undoubtedly Spurs need to cut out their inconsistency when they return from the break, and every player has room for improvement, including Porro, but the Spaniard should not take to heart the calls for him to be dropped, and he should not be made the scapegoat for collectively poor team performances.
