Cristian Romero sends promise to Tottenham fans after Ipswich defeat
Tottenham Hotspur defender, Cristian Romero, sends a message to fans on social media after another disappointing loss.
Back from injury, but could not affect the result
After missing the Europa League game against Galatasaray, Cristian Romero overcame the injury which forced him off against Aston Villa. Partnered with Radu Dragusin, Romero took up his usual role of being the main figure in Tottenham’s build-up.
It was not a standout performance from the defender. While often left exasperatedly, waving his arms for a passing option, he persevered. Romero ended up making more progressive passes than Dragusin or Pedro Porro.
Defensively, Romero won his header, but it deflected up for Szmodics to open the scoring with his uncontested overhead kick. Shortly after, Romero was unable to block the cross which Vicario palmed onto Dragusin before Liam Delap followed in.
The Spurs vice-captain took to social media to comment on the defeat which has left the team in mid-table going into the international break.
Romero says Spurs ‘wasted another opportunity’
On Instagram, Romero posted after the game: “Beautiful to go out for the first time with you.
“Thanks to the fans for always being respectful and always being there. Today we wasted another opportunity. A moment that we will overcome and come back stronger all together.”
The opening line was in reference to the Ipswich match being the first occasion Romero was able to walk his young son, Valentino, out from the tunnel onto the pitch as a team mascot. The post contained a collection of photos of Romero’s son, highlighting that while it was a poor result, it was a special and memorable day for him as a father.
Tottenham need action from Cristian Romero, not words
Romero’s message contained the usual tone of hope and commitment to improvement. However, there was an inferred bitterness towards yet another instance of Spurs letting an opportunity to ascend the table, slip through their fingers.
Romero’s disciplinary record has had a noticeable improvement this year, currently only receiving 1 yellow card in the Premier League. However, perhaps this squad who are trending towards starting games slowly, need inspiration via his desire to be front-footed and aggressive, in order to assert themselves early and win their fixtures.
