Pedro Porro aids rehabilitation efforts
Over the last couple of weeks, the world has been shocked by the scenes emerging from Valencia, with catastrophic floods overwhelming the city, which received a year’s worth of rainfall in less than a day.
More than 220 people died and nearly 80 are still missing in what is the most deadly deluge in a single European country since 1967 (Reuters).
Porro described the scenes back in his home country as heartbreaking and dedicated Tottenham’s win over Aston Villa to the people of Valencia. He also revealed that he would donate a part of his salary to the victims of the disaster and the rehabilitation efforts (The Standard).
Ange Postecoglou reacts to Porro’s gesture
Postecoglou is not surprised by Porro‘s act of kindness, explaining that the 25-year-old is an extremely empathetic person who always looks to help those around him.
The Tottenham head coach also suggested that situations like the one in Valencia should give the players perspective on what they do, adding that the challenges that they face pale in comparison to the ones that many do around the world.
When asked about Porro’s donation to the victims, Postecolgou told Football.London: “I think most players understand that they are in a pretty privileged position and I think all of them understand the social responsibility that they also carry. Areas where they can help. Pedro is certainly a person who is very empathetic in that way, you see him with the younger players or with people in general. It is great.
“I always say to the players, we always need to understand whatever our tough moments are, they pale into insignificance to some of the challenges that people in wider society face.
“If we can always give back and contribute, I always think those kinds of things come back in spades. Not just in terms of gratitude or anything like that, but just for your own life, you feel like you are making a meaningful contribution to something where you have been privileged in your own position.”
Postecoglou is big on signing players with the right values
Postecoglou has always been clear on keeping and signing players who have the right values and who are good human beings.
The Australian repeatedly stresses that the personalities of the players are just as important as their footballing attributes, which is why the Tottenham head coach has managed to create a family feel at Hotspur Way.
The current Spurs squad is full of fantastic people, with hardly a single bad egg in the group, which is why they are so easy to love.
