UN Chief: World must act now to prevent Climate Disaster or humanity will pay the price
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned world leaders at the COP29 Climate Summit to invest in preventing humanitarian disasters caused by climate change; otherwise, humanity will bear the cost.
The UN Secretary-General stated on Tuesday, November 12, at the climate conference that time is running out to mitigate the harmful effects of global warming.
Meanwhile, the UN Refugee Agency presented its report titled “No Escape: On the Frontlines of Climate Change, Conflict, and Displacement” at the Global Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The report highlighted that poorer nations—including Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea in Africa; Bangladesh, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in Asia; and Venezuela and Colombia in South America—are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The COP29 Climate Summit is being held amid data from the United Nations showing that nearly 20 million Afghans have faced an emergency and food crisis in recent years due to drought, economic pressures, and vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods, unseasonal rains, and earthquakes.
This summit emphasizes the urgent need for global action to support these vulnerable populations and underscores the disproportionate effects of climate change on low-income countries.
As calls for environmental justice grow louder, the outcomes of COP29 could be critical in shaping policies to protect affected communities and to ensure equitable climate resilience for all.
