Throning is where you date someone who can boost your reputation purely by being associated with them.
If someone was throning, they would flaunt their partner on social media to make their way up the social ladder, gain popularity and attention.
It is not necessarily about forming deep and emotional connections but focuses on a more transactional side of a relationship to get you to where you want to be.
Metaphorically, throning is putting the person you’re dating on a thrown for their social status.
Does throning focus on romantic relationships?
Throning is not necessarily about forming deep and emotional connections but focuses on a more transactional side of a relationship to get you to where you want to be.
This is instead of looking more deeply at their character and qualities inside – and therefore isn’t a romantic relationship.
As The Swaddle outlines: “The problem arises when one’s motivation to date another is driven solely by their social aspirations, rather than romantic interest, attraction, affection, and most other things that form the foundation of a relationship.”
It continues to say how throning “prioritizes influence and clout” over other things that matter – which could have bad consequences.
Dating experts claim that those participating in the trend should think why they are doing so and how it may affect them – and their significant other – in the future.
It’s also important to note that “real fulfilment in relationship tends to come from authenticity and mutual respect”, founder of dating app Reddi Stacy Thomson told Indy100.
Is throning new on the dating scene?
Throning isn’t necessarily a new term or concept.
It has similar connotations to “gold digging” or “clout chasing” – which have been very popular terms in the online world.
And it’s visible throughout history that people have used throning on the dating sites to work their way up socially.
With the growing dominance of social media, it’s easier to tell what job somebody has and the lifestyle they lead by their various profiles across different platforms.
And another symbol of social status now is how many followers you have, which initially coined the term “clout chaser”.
