Watch the stomach-churning moment MasterChef The Professionals star serves RAW duck heart – and judges refuse to eat it
A MASTERCHER The Professionals contestant served up RAW duck heart during last night’s show – and the judges refused to eat it.
Monday night’s instalment of the BBC show saw four more chefs battle it out for a place in the final.
As part of the skills test, Rachide and Cristina had to try and impress Gregg Wallace, Monica Galetti and Marcus Wareing with a dish chosen by them.
They had to dish up a five-spiced duck breast served with duck heart skewer served with an orange sauce.
As soon as Cristina was given the task, Marcus commented: “I’m not sure if that’s a look of confusion or a look of confidence.”
The celebrity chef also pointed out that he thought she should have put the duck breast in the pan straight away to cook it, but she carried on cutting other bits of meat.
She put the breast and the heart in the pan at the same time – but Marcus said that they didn’t cook at the same time, and also had no seasoning on either bits of the meat.
Moments before plating it up, Marcus then said: “That duck’s not going to be cooked.”
Gregg asked her to plate the food up and she asked how much more time she had left.
The host told her 30 seconds, so she put the duck breast back on the pan and asked: “Is that duck breast not cooked?”
“Not as much as I want it to be,” Cristina confessed.
Luckily the duck breast was cooked through – however the heart wasn’t.
Monica said: “The heart skewers you’ve cooked them whole – which is fine, but they’re raw in the middle.
“You really need to treat it like proper protein…
“Baste it and maybe get it into the oven.”
Monica left the heart at the side of the plate and didn’t eat it.
MasterChef facts
MASTERCHEF has been a staple BBC series for years - but what are the key details?
- MasterChef launched on BBC One back in 1990
- It ran until 2001, then was revived in 2005 as MasterChef Goes Large
- John Torode joined the revamped series in 2005, where he teamed up with Gregg Wallace as hosts
- Controversial moments? In March 2018, Gregg refused to judge Zaleha Kadir Olpin’s stewed chicken rendang dish as he claimed it was ‘not crispy enough and could not be eaten.’
At the end of the programme, it was revealed that Cristina and Rachide were leaving the competition.
This meant that Pippa and Ian went through to the quarter final.
Regular judge Marcus was blown away by the show of talent on this year’s Skills Test, and branded it one of the best he’s seen in the past decade of the show.
He also gushed: “One chef this time listened carefully to the brief, didn’t overly try to impress, held their nerve and made a dish almost identical to the one I put up.
“I can’t wait to see what they do next!”
Monica and Gregg are returning as judges this year alongside Michelin-star chef Marcus.
This is Gregg’s tenth year in the role, and while reflecting on his time on MasterChef, he said: “It’s a privilege to be part of this show, it’s forever changing and evolving, so the past 10 years have flown by.”
He went on to joke about the lack of appreciation from his co-stars, adding: “Although, Monica and Gregg didn’t get me a cake, a glass of champagne or anything to celebrate!”
