EU envoy emphasizes continued humanitarian aid to Afghanistan
Veronika Baskovic Pohar, the European Union’s chargé d’affaires for Afghanistan, has assured that humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan will continue.
This announcement came after a meeting between Pohar and Abdul Kabir, the political deputy of the Taliban-led government, in Kabul on Saturday, November 9.
According to an official statement released by the Taliban government, the two officials discussed a range of issues concerning Afghanistan’s current situation. Pohar emphasized the EU’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan through humanitarian aid while expressing the EU’s desire to address the ongoing challenges facing the country.
The European diplomat highlighted that the EU aims to implement its efforts in the most effective and targeted manner to address Afghanistan’s urgent needs. She reiterated that solving the problems in Afghanistan is a priority for the EU, especially amid the country’s dire humanitarian crisis.
On his part, Abdul Kabir stressed the importance of European Union support in areas such as counter-narcotics, alternative livelihoods to poppy cultivation, job creation, and rehabilitation of drug addicts.
Pohar, who took over as the EU’s chargé d’affaires in early September after the departure of her predecessor, Rafaela Iodice, underscored the importance of continued cooperation between the EU and Afghanistan to address these pressing issues.
In addition to humanitarian support, the EU has pledged $100 million to Afghanistan, focusing on humanitarian and developmental projects, particularly in the agricultural sector.
This assistance is seen as vital as Afghanistan continues to grapple with economic hardship and a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by conflict and political instability.
The EU mission in Kabul was reopened in February 2022, after the Taliban’s return to power, and has been concentrating its efforts on providing humanitarian assistance and addressing the country’s immediate needs.
As Afghanistan faces growing economic difficulties and widespread poverty, continued humanitarian aid from the EU remains critical.
However, addressing long-term developmental challenges, such as employment opportunities and drug eradication, will require sustained international cooperation and support from both regional and global partners.
The EU’s focus on these areas underscores its ongoing commitment to improving the lives of Afghans amid a difficult and uncertain future.
