Major road closing NEXT WEEK with 14.3-mile diversion sparking town gridlock fears – check your route
THOUSANDS of motorists could be facing chaos next week after a major road is set to be closed.
The gateway road between the border of Wales and England will be shut for four nights, sparking gridlock fears.
A section of the A483 is set to close between November 11 and 15[/caption]There will be a 14.3-mile diversion put in place for commuters to use as an alternative route.
The closure – of the A483 Dee Viaduct in Wrexham – will be in effect from 9pm to 6am between November 11 and 15.
It is for structural inspections of the 34-year-old bridge – which is 348 metres long.
The viaduct is said to be the highest in the UK to carry a road over a river and it stands 57.3 meters above the River Dee.
Under normal circumstances, the diversion would take drivers via the B5605 in Newbridge.
But this was closed in January 2021 after a section collapsed down an embankment during Storm Christophe, causing a further headache.
Repairs to the road are now finally underway, with the works set to be completed by May 2025.
An alternative diversion is in place, however, taking drivers over a medieval bridge to Llangollen.
Motorists should follow signs to the A5 Halton roundabout and then the A483 Ruabon Interchange at junction 1.
Traffic Wales said the closure had been organised to cause minimal inconvenience to drivers.
A statement said: “The works are being carried out overnight when traffic flows are historically lower to minimise disruption.”
It comes as other roadworks, such as those to the A487 Porthmadog bypass roundabout, are also set to affect drivers in North Wales.
The roundabout currently has temporary traffic lights in place, which are due to come down on Friday (November 8).
Traffic Wales said: “Delays may occur, please plan your journeys accordingly.”
