Acadia sheriff speaks on Iota High lockdown, arrest of student after loaded magazine found on campus
ACADIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Law enforcement was called to Iota High School on Thursday after a loaded magazine was found on campus. After one student was arrested in connection with the incident, Sheriff KP Gibson said the sheriff's office take protocols of possible weapons on campus very seriously.
"Ninety-nine times, it could be a false complaint. But that one time that it is [real], and we don't take it serious, we just put a human life in jeopardy," Gibson said.
Gibson said the first initiative of law enforcement in these protocols is to evacuate all students and staff.
"In that aspect when they went into a hard lockdown, that hard lockdown requires a clearing of the school to make sure there are no other weapons or that there's not a weapon, period, at school," Gibson.
Once all patrons are evacuated, Gibson said law enforcement next priority is to search every perimeter of the campus to ensure no other weapons are inside.
Our swat team responded with the protocol of searching the campus, working with the administration and the superintendent, took some time, but we went through it just to make sure that the school was safe and that all on the campus were safe as possible," Gibson said.
The juvenile has been booked into the Acadia Parish Jail with pending charges, Gibson said.
