NJ wildfires now spread to five counties
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- Portions of New Jersey are experiencing some of the worst drought conditions in the country, and the entire state is under a red flag warning.
Wildfires are currently burning in Bergen, Ocean, Gloucester, Burlington, and Camden counties.
As of 2:45 p.m. Friday, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service reports that the wildfire in Englewood Cliffs has burned 39 acres and is 30% contained. No structures are threatened and no one has been evacuated.
“I cannot believe we have not had rain for the entire month,” said Bashi Nierenberg, who lives near Bergen County.
“It’s inevitable that that would happen,” said Beatriz Robles, who said her son in California is experiencing wildfires as well.
“If God doesn’t send the rain, we’re in trouble,” said Robles. “And I’ve been praying for rain.”
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service said residents should expect smoky conditions for several days because of the multiple wildfires currently burning.
Statewide, wood and charcoal fires are not allowed until the drought is over. Residents are also warned to be mindful when discarding cigarettes and operating machinery that could cause sparks.
