NYC trash bin rules start next week
NEW YORK (PIX11) --- New York City's new trash bin rules go into effect next week.
Starting Tuesday, New Yorkers living in single-family homes or 9-unit buildings will be required to put their garbage bags in bins, according to the Department of Sanitation. The container must be 55 gallons or less.
The city is selling the NYC Bin to help clear black garbage bags off the streets and keep the rats away, officials said. The official NYC Bin runs about $50, and can be purchased online at bins.nyc.
There is a warning period from Nov. 2 to Jan. 2, 2025 before fines are issued, according to the DSNY. The tickets range from $50 to $200, depending on the number of offenses.
New Yorkers can still use their existing bins until June 2026 as long as they have secure lids and are 55 gallons or less. Residents will need to switch to the official NYC Bin after that.
