Joe Newell Joins Hibernian Community Foundation Board
Hibernian Community Foundation is proud to announce that Hibernian Men’s First Team captain Joe Newell has joined the board!
Since joining the club in 2019, Newell has dedicated a large amount of time and effort to volunteering and supporting the range of activities and initiatives Hibernian Community Foundation provides, including Feeding the 500 on Christmas Day and the 2024 Edinburgh Kiltwalk.
“Joe’s commitment to the club and foundation has been admirable since he arrived, and to have him on the board further strengthens the ties between foundation and club,” said HCF Director Daljit Singh.
“For us to have the club captain attending our board meetings and taking a keen interest in what we provide the community is a great sign. It will only strengthen our mission to lead in providing care for those not only in the Leith community, but in the greater Edinburgh area.”
Newell’s appointment was announced at the Hibernian Community Foundation Supporters Reception earlier this month to widespread approval, with both the board and supporters looking forward to what he can offer.
Speaking to Hibs TV after the announcement, Newell explained his reasoning behind the decision.
“Last year we thought the connection between the team, the Board and the Foundation was really good – so they asked me to come on board and to help continue that after David Marshall retired.
“I was more than happy to do so, they do such amazing work in and around the local community so I am really looking forward to continuing to help out.
“I have always wanted to help and to do my bit, so it was a natural progression for me to step onto the Board. It is something that I am really enthusiastic about, and it is cause that is so important to so many different people across the whole city.”
Newell will replace former Hibernian FC goalkeeper David Marshall on the board as the player representative, after Marshall served for the last year of his playing career. With Newell signed on with Hibs until 2027, his appearance at board meetings will present him with an opportunity to get close to foundation activities and programmes.
After five seasons at Easter Road, Newell has established himself as a fan favourite, taking home double accolades at the 2022/23 end of season awards: Club’s Player and Player’s Player of the Year. Having made 200 appearances to date, Newell is the second longest-serving player in the squad, scoring 11 goals in his time so far.
Everyone at the Hibernian Community Foundation is incredibly excited by this appointment and are looking forward to working with Joe Newell to enhance offerings for the community. To find out more about HCF’s activities and initiatives click here.
