Liverpool vs Aston Villa preview
Liverpool and Aston Villa return to their domestic duties after mixed fortunes in the Champions League.
Arne Slot’s side powered to a comprehensive 4-0 win over Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, while the Villans succumbed to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Belgian opponents Club Brugge.
Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick as Liverpool maintained their flawless start to the competition. It ensured that the Reds stayed top of the new Champions League format standings with a maximum 12 points from four games.
And being top of the table is something Slot is becoming increasingly familiar with.
Liverpool are also leading the Premier League standings on 25 points after eight wins from their opening ten games of the 2024/25 campaign.
A great deal of that success has been from their defensive stability. Only Manchester City (32) have faced fewer shots on target than Liverpool in the Premier League this season (34), with the Reds also conceding the fewest goals (6) and having the lowest xG against figure this term (8.1).
It means that Slot has become just the fifth manager to win as many as eight of his first 10 Premier League games in charge.
And he might just feel confident of grabbing another win on Saturday given Unai Emery’s side have lost 16 of their previous 18 Premier League away games against teams starting the day top of the table.
Although Slot will want to remedy his side’s recent habit of falling behind in matches. Liverpool have conceded the first goal in their last two Premier League games, but avoided defeat in both.
As for Villa, they might just be feeling the affects of a busy European fixture list.
Following a run of eight wins in 10 matches in all competitions, they are now winless in their last four outings – losing their last three on the bounce to Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Club Brugge.
They’ve also failed to win the match immediately after their Champions League exertions on the last two occasions (vs Manchester United and Bournemouth).

Home goals
Aston Villa’s away record has been pretty impressive overall having taken 10 points from a possible 15. However, they have conceded nine goals in five games on their travels – which is the sixth-highest total of any side in the division.
They also have an xGC (expected goals conceded) of 8.31 on the road and have lost five of their last six at Anfield by a scoreline of 12-4. Liverpool, meanwhile, have registered the most efforts on target in home matches (38) and are averaging a chance every 6.2 minutes.
