GB Women get past Denmark to improve to 2-1
Great Britain took down Denmark 75-62 improving to 2-1 in Group D of the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket qualifiers on Thursday evening in Manchester.
It was a crucial an important victory for Anna Montañana’s side as they win their second straight game of the qualifiers ahead of Sunday’s vital tie with Sweden in Malmo.
Holly Winterburn finished a rebound short of a triple double, having 12 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists, while Savannah Wilkinson had a 14-point, 10-rebound double double and Sam Ashby added 13, all in the second half.
“It was an important game at home for us,” GB Head Coach Anna Montanana said.
“It’s a great win, we fought through the whole 40 minutes, we knew it was going to be easy, but we are satisfied to win this game by 13.”
In the midst of a new era for the programme after Montanana’s appointment earlier this year, Winterburn feels they are progressing well as a unit.
“Anna’s come in and she’s completely changed everything, in the right way,” Holly Winterburn said.
“Everyone has a role on this team, everyone is playing really hard and everyone is held accountable, whether they are number 1 or number 12 on the team. Everyone’s responded really well, has a great attitude, so it’s working in our favour.
“They (Denmark) tried to come back a number of times, and for a new team that sometimes is not easy to handle but every time they made a run we responded.”
Maria Jespersen led all scorers in vain for Denmark with 19 points, hitting four three-pointers.
“Not the result that we wanted,” Denmark Head Coach Alva Stark said after the game.
“I think we have too many mistakes today, together with poor shooting that I think would have made a huge difference.”
GB now head to Sweden to close out the window, playing against the undefeated host country at 1pm UK time on Sunday.
