7 minibike riders arrested for reckless driving in downtown Portland after police chase
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Seven minibike riders were arrested after police say were "riding recklessly" in Downtown Portland, leading to a police chase Wednesday night.
Just after 9 p.m., police say they were monitoring a political gathering in Pioneer Courthouse Square when officers saw a group of minibike riders doing burnouts.
The riders then drove away from police while running red lights into Old Town and over the Burnside Bridge.
Officers eventually found and arrested the riders at a gas station parking lot on Southeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Alder Street.
Although one of the riders got away, the seven arrested - ranging in age from 25 to 38 - are all facing charges of reckless driving.
The eight minibikes were also seized by police and towed. Police say they appear to be homemade bikes "with small engines, no license plates and no required lighting."
It is unclear at this time if there is any connection between the riders and the gathering at the square.
