Ridiculous Dominic Solanke pressing stat shows he’s in a league of his own
A stat revealed by Premier League statistician Jonny Blain shows just how much better Dominic Solanke is at pressing his opponents than every other player in the division.
Dominic Solanke the perfect fit for Spurs
Solanke has proven to be the perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou‘s system, with the centre-forward offering a physical presence upfront which Spurs were lacking last season and being excellent at dropping deep to combine with others while also having an eye for goal.
However, the 26-year-old’s best attribute is undoubtedly his engine and pressing ability, with the Englishman being a tireless worker out of possession.
He does not allow opposition goalkeepers and defenders to have any time on the ball as the Aston Villa players found out on Sunday.
Solanke’s ridiculous pressing numbers
Premier League statistician, Jonny Blain has now revealed that the Tottenham man tops the table in the league for pressures in the first third, with 240 to his name so far.
Solanke is miles above his peers, with no other player in the division even having 175 pressures this season.
Critics eating their words
A number of Spurs fans were critical of the club’s decision to go for Solanke over Ivan Toney, even though Postecoglou had clearly stated that the former Cherries star was his top target.
The Australian coach’s judgement has proven to be right, and many detractors will be happy to eat humble pie now.
Given the lack of top-class number nines in the market at the moment, the £65m fee that Spurs paid for Solanke seems like smart business.
