Key stat may explain why teams are sitting back against Tottenham
Whoscored have now provided a stat which shows why many teams are hesitant to take the game to Tottenham Hotspur this season.
Teams have shown respect to Spurs
Almost every opponent that Tottenham have come up against this season, particularly at home, have decided to sit back and let the Lilywhites have the ball.
Even the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa have done the same, with Manchester City being the only side who committed bodies forward regularly in their Carabao Cup clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The reason for that is clear: Spurs have been the best counter-attacking side in Europe this season.
Tottenham’s outstanding counter-attacking
While Ange Postecoglou‘s men prefer to play on the front foot and have possession, they are especially threatening if the opposition loses the ball after committing bodies forward.
In fact, according to Whoscored, no team in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more goals on counter-attacks than Spurs have this season.
That is why teams are often hesitant to commit bodies forward against the North London side, knowing full well that the likes of Johnson, Son and Solanke can exploit the spaces at the back.
Ange Postecoglou is not a one-trick pony
Postecoglou has been criticised for being a one-trick pony and for only being able to set up a team to win one way.
However, Spurs’ prowess on the break is clear evidence to the contrary as they continue to hurt most teams who have dared to take them on at their own game.
Although Tottenham did not take their chances in second-half of the Carabao Cup clash against Manchester City last week, they showed during those 45 minutes that they can be devastating on the counter-attack when they do not have much of the ball.
