Man ‘decapitated’ after being hit by bus in late night accident named
A pensioner who was decapitated after being hit by a bus in Edinburgh has been named.
Michael Leneghen, 74, died after being hit by the single-decker in the Cowgate area of the city on Saturday night.
The horrific accident is believed to have taken place after he fell into the road.
His family has released a statement, which said: ‘We wish to thank all the members of the public and emergency services involved. We would now ask for privacy at this time.’
Sergeant Paul Ewing said: ‘Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.
‘Our enquiries remain ongoing. We have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time and work is ongoing to check public and private CCTV footage.
‘We are still keen to hear from anyone who has not yet spoken to police. If you have any information about what happened, then please get in touch.’
Several roads in the area were closed while forensics officers and detectives pieced together what led to Mr Leneghan’s death.
Halloween events were also abandoned when venues were ordered to shut.
Chief inspector Trisha Clark, the local area commander working on the incident, urged people to avoid sharing graphic footage of the aftermath online and to report any graphic content to social media operators.
She said: ‘We are aware of videos and images circulating on social media which are causing distress to the deceased’s family and those viewing them inadvertently.
‘We would ask members of the public not to share them out of respect for his family, and to report them to the relevant social media platform to prevent further circulation.’
