Harrowing moment baby in pram is hit by a TRAIN after rolling towards track in front of horrified passengers

THIS is the horrifying moment a baby in a pram was hit by a train.

Harrowing CCTV footage shows the pram rolling towards moving train pulling into Banbury Station in Oxford on June 8.

The parent had momentarily let go of the pram and turned their back to pick up a suitcase on the busy platform.

But the stroller, containing a two-month-old baby, rolled slowly towards the tracks as the train pulled into the station.

The train was still travelling at around 35mph with the impact sending the buggy crashing down the platform before it topples over.

Gut-wrenching video showed how the tot was spilled on to the platform as horrified onlookers sprang into action.

The scary footage then shows someone quickly grab the baby, who suffered a head injury, off the floor to safety.

In what was a miracle, the three-month-old baby luckily came away largely unscathed after the pram was clipped by the train.

The shock incident, which happened in June, was featured in a report released today by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

It read: “The accident occurred because the pram, which had been momentarily released by the infant’s parent, rolled along the platform slope, which sloped towards the platform edge at that location.

“Around 15 seconds before the accident, the infant’s parent started to move the pram closer to the platform edge, intending to board the train.

“The infant’s parent then leant away from the pram to place one hand on their wheeled luggage and turned to face their relative, momentarily letting go of the pram.

“With the parent still facing away from the pram, it began to move towards the platform edge.

“Around three seconds before the accident, the front of the train passed the position where the pram was located, and the pram continued to roll towards the platform edge.

“Around one second before the accident, the relative tried to intervene but the pram contacted the train’s bodyside.

“This contact occurred while the train was moving at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h) and caused the pram to spin and tip over, resulting in the infant falling from the pram onto the platform surface.

“The infant sustained a minor head injury as a result.”

CrossCountry trains previously said that the driver of the train had carried out no operational wrongdoing on his part during the incident.

A CrossCountry spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the mother and baby involved in the incident at Banbury last week, and reviews with industry partners have shown CrossCountry colleagues followed all relevant operational and safety rules.

“This distressing incident is a reminder of the need for people to be vigilant, safe and secure at all times when near the railway.”

The baby’s mother and grandmother were reportedly distraught following the fright.

It serves as a stark reminder to be wary of getting too close to the tracks after 11 accidental deaths on Britain’s railways in 2022/23.

West Midlands railway boss Jamie Ainsworth in February warned people about train danger following footage that surfaced of a man ignoring flashing red lights at a level crossing.

He took his dog under the barrier and walked across the tracks despite the train coming through just moments later.

The railway chief said in response: “I hope this video will remind the public to concentrate, wait behind barriers and follow instructions at level crossings to stay safe at all times.

“Incidents like this can also have a big impact on train drivers and I urge the public to bear this in mind when using level crossings.”
