I heard a scream as my daughter was scarred for life by a budget Shein buy – I was offered 94p as compensation
A MUM claims her teenage daughter has been left ”scarred for life” from horrific burns after ”spilling Shein nail glue” onto her legs – and was only offered an ”insulting” 94p refund.
Rebecca Clarke, who lives in Basingstoke, Hampshire, was horrified when she heard her daughter Jasmine scream from upstairs while applying a set of fake nails.
One mum claims her teenage daughter has been left ‘scarred for life’ from horrific burns after ‘spilling Shein nail glue’ onto her legs[/caption] According to Rebecca, she was only offered an ‘insulting’ 94p refund[/caption] The China-based online retailer has declined to comment[/caption]The 47-year-old said she had purchased a set of acrylic stick-on nails and quick-drying nail glue from Shein for the 13-year-old in August.
After sticking on a couple of nails, Jasmine reportedly dropped the glue bottle and some of the contents spilled onto her leggings.
Then mum claims the nail glue burnt through her daughter’s clothes and caused immediate blisters to appear on the inside of her legs.
The mum-of-two rushed Jasmine to A&E where doctors were forced to pop and drain the blisters – one of which became infected.
Rebecca, who works in admin, said her daughter will be scarred for life and is calling on Shein to investigate the product due to the severity of the injuries.
The nail glue contains a hazard warning on the back of the product, advising users to ”avoid contact with skin and eyes” and warns that it ”bonds skin and eyes in seconds”.
All the chemicals that are used in the product comply with UK health and safety standards.
Rebecca said: “My daughter wanted to put on some fake nails upstairs. She’s used this before from Shein and never had a problem.
“She was putting the glue on when she dropped the bottle and it went down the inside of her legs.
“She had leggings on at the time but it obviously went through them. She took the leggings off, which took off a little bit of the skin.
“She was screaming in pain. I thought we would see how the burns were in a few days but then they started to blister and that’s when I said ‘we’re going to the hospital‘.
“She came downstairs and was crying saying she was really sorry before showing me her legs. She was in a lot of pain.”
Rebecca rushed her daughter to A&E where she claims doctors were shocked over the extent of her injuries.
The mum had to take Jasmine to weekly appointments to have her wounds dressed and checked, and said she’ll be left scarred for life.
The bottle comes with a warning on the back that labels it an ”irritant” and states it should not come into contact with eyes or skin.
Rebecca said: “It broke out in blisters within two or three minutes. She had to have cold water therapy for half an hour because the burns were getting deeper into her skin.
What age can you take kid to get their nails done?
MUMS have sparked controversy after allowing their kids to get acrylic nails. But just how old do they have to be to be allowed to get them done legally.
According to the National Occupational Standards, anyone under the age of 16 has to be accompanied by an adult.
They also need written consent from a parents or guardian.
It’s also a good idea to check that the salon you’re planning to go to – just to ask if they offer services to children.
“Then the doctors had to burst and drain the blisters before removing one layer of skin. There’s nothing about any burn reaction on the bottle. The doctors were really shocked.
“They said nail glue shouldn’t burn. No doctor could understand how she ended up with such bad burns from a little pot of nail glue.
“She’ll be scarred from this. She’s been told she’s giong to be scarred for life. She’s a 13-year-old girl and will want to wear shorts next year, but she’s going to have bad scars.
“They told us it would take months to heal because the burns were so dark and so deep.
“It was horrible seeing your daughter in pain and knowing she’d be scarred. I was so confused how nail glue could do this.”
Jasmine says her complaints to Shein have gone ignored, claiming she received an unexpected 94p refund – the cost of the glue – from the website, which she described as an insult.
Jasmine said: “They never got back to me. All I got was a refund of 94p for the bottle of glue. I’ve had no correspondence with them. I’ve been totally ignored.
“94p is an insult for what she’s been through and what she’s going through. She was a teenager just wanting to put on some fake nails and now she’s scarred for life.
“I’ve not had an apology or anything. This could easily burn anyone else. I’d hate to think what it could do if it went in someone’s eye or something.
“This should be taken more seriously. These were huge burns and it’s still ongoing two months later.
“I would like an apology from Shein and some sort of recognition that they’re going to do something about it.”
Shein declined to comment.
