Packing your bags, then? All the celebs who threatened to LEAVE the US if Trump won election, from Miley Cyrus to Cher 

SOME Hollywood celebrities have previously vowed to leave the US if Donald Trump became President, now his shock election victory is set to upset many of the left-wing elite.

After the Republican strongman’s crushing triumph over Kamala Harris, it is still not known whether they will move out for good or mourn their defeat hidden away in their multimillion-dollar mansions.

Democratic candidate Harris had an array of famous faces endorsing her campaign, including Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah Winfrey, Cardi B and Taylor Swift to name a few.

Many celebs expressed their grief, rage, and despair after Trump’s triumph, but none of them seemed to be rushing to their private jets and flee “failed America”.

Here we take a look at some of the stars who made the bold promise: “If Donald Trump wins, I’m out”.

Samuel L. Jackson

In December 2015, Samuel L. Jackson humorously suggested he might move to South Africa during a skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the cast of The Hateful Eight sang about a “hateful eight ball.”

After Donald Trump’s election victory in November 2016, Jackson addressed the joke on Twitter, saying: “When you learn the difference between My Actual Opinion & A Kimmel Skit… Maybe we can talk. Till then, I’m Barbed Wire Up Your A**es!!”

Despite his outspoken criticism, Jackson has continued to live in the U.S., working on Marvel films and appearing on Broadway, while also supporting Kamala Harris’s campaigns.

Bryan Cranston

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston said in a late 2016 interview on The Bestseller Experiment podcast that he would “definitely move” to Vancouver, Canada, if Trump won the presidency.

“It’s not real to me that that would happen. I hope to God it won’t,” he said.

But after Trump’s victory, Cranston walked back his statement on Twitter, expressing shock but also hope that the president-elect could unify the country. 

Cranston, who endorsed Harris this year, wrote: “I sincerely wish him success.”

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg, a vocal Trump critic, refused to say Trump’s name on The View after his 2016 election win.

She said: “He’s the president. I’m still not going to say his name—that’s not going to change.”

Before the election, Goldberg suggested she might leave the U.S., saying: “Maybe it’s time for me to move… I can afford to go.”

But she later clarified she had no plans to leave.

In May 2024, Trump shared a meme claiming Goldberg would move to Canada if he won reelection, to which she responded on The View: “I’m not going anywhere… I’ve got a contract, so I’ll be here where I’m wanted.”

Cher

In 2015, Cher joked on X (formerly Twitter) that she would move to Jupiter if Trump became president.

Though she stayed in the U.S. after Trump’s 2016 victory, she told The Guardian in October 2023 that his presidency caused her significant stress, even leading to health issues. 

The singer said: “I almost got an ulcer the last time. If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave.”

As of Wednesday evening, Cher had not commented on the latest election results on social media.

Raven-Symoné

In 2016, Disney Channel star Raven-Symoné vowed to move to Canada with her family if Trump won.

She claimed on The View: “I already have my ticket. I literally bought my ticket, I swear.”

But despite her pledge, she stayed in America after the election and has not commented on Tuesday’s election results on social media.

Miley Cyrus

Another vocal Trump critic, Miley Cyrus expressed outrage at the idea of a Trump presidency in a 2016 Instagram post.

She furiously wrote at the time: “Honestly f*** this s*** I am moving if this is my president! I don’t say things I don’t mean!” 

But after Trump’s victory, Cyrus stayed in the U.S. and later admitted her comments were misguided. 

In a 2017 interview with NME, she called her earlier statement “dumb” and “ignorant,” explaining that leaving would have been abandoning her country. 

As of Wednesday, Miley Cyrus had not addressed the latest election results publicly.

Lena Dunham

In April 2016, Girls creator Lena Dunham told an audience at the Matrix Awards in New York City that she was “100 per cent” serious about moving to Canada if Trump won the election.

She mentioned Vancouver as a potential destination where she could continue her work, the CBC reported.

But Dunham never relocated and remains active in the U.S., pursuing her career and advocacy.

After Trump’s election, she clarified on Instagram that her comments had been made in jest, adding: “It’s easy to joke about moving to Canada.

“It’s harder to see, and to love, the people who fill your mailbox with hate… but I’m willing to try.”

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer said in September 2016 that she might move to Spain or elsewhere if Trump were elected, joking she’d need to learn Spanish.

But following Trump’s win, she clarified that her comments were not serious, saying: “The interview where I said I would move was in jest… not that anyone needs more than a headline to count something as official news.”

Schumer also expressed frustration with those telling her to “pack her bags,” equating them to those who voted for Trump.

Reflecting on Hillary Clinton’s campaign, Schumer noted that while Clinton would have raised taxes on wealthy individuals like herself, she believed Clinton “would have taken care of us.”

Recently, Schumer has been vocal about antisemitism and shared exit polling data highlighting high support for Kamala Harris among Black and Jewish women.

On Wednesday, Schumer shared a tweet that read: “Per CNN exit polling the top 2 demographics that voted for Kamala Harris are: Black women @ 92% and Jewish women @ 88%..”
