‘The Masked Singer 12′ episode 6 recap: Which Grammy-nominated star was eliminated on ’60s Night’?
It’s time to get groovy on “60’s Night” on “The Masked Singer!” The show opens with a rendition of “Fun, Fun, Fun” by The Beach Boys before the Group B finalists sing their hearts out to secure a spot in the Quarter Finals. The celebrities will pay tribute to the grooviest era of all with songs like, “House Of The Rising Sun,” “Do You Love Me” and “Ain’t No Way” before the peace and love must come to an end. Will there be a dramatic double elimination, or will judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora use the Ding Dong Keep It On Bell? Tune-in to see who will be unmasked in the all-new “60’s Night” episode of “The Masked Singer” airing Wednesday, Nov. 6 (8:00-9:02 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Nick Cannon hosts.
The Group B final kicks off with Goo. In his clue package he reveals, “Making it to the Group B Finals makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. Honestly, I’m just now starting to fully believe in myself. I once had a major goal, and scraped up just enough money to survive for only one year to make it happen. I was on borrowed slime. With a dollar and a dream, I didn’t just coast, I worked harder than anyone else. Luckily, it paid off. That’s when I got a rare call that changed everything. You know, this past year’s been far out, a total rush! And I feel I’m still on the rise to greatness. It just goos to show, nothing’s impossible if you believe in yourself. I’m trying to remember that tonight, because it would literally melt my heart if I made it to the Quarter Finals.”
Goo sings “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. It’s a great song that show’s off Goo’s strong lower register at the beginning, falsetto in the chorus, and powerful belting range. For an additional clue, we see a whistle in a bowl of jell-o. Goo sings, “O say can you see, that has a special meaning to me in more than one way.” The panel guesses Goo is Anthony Hamilton (Rita), Brian McKnight (Ken), or Leon Bridges (Robin).
Next up is Bluebell. In her clue package she reveals, “I can’t believe it! I made it to the Group B finals! I love dancing and singing, expressing my creativity — because there was a time when I had not a drop of inspiration in my bucket. I was at the top of my field, but when things stopped going my way, I was left wondering, ‘Does anyone still love me?’ My ideas dried up, and it felt like I couldn’t put two words together to save my life. No seed I planted seemed to grow, and that writers’ block carried on for years! But it all changed the moment I became a mom. All off the sudden, with a fresh-cut perspective, inspiration came flooding back. Now, being here, I feel like the Bluebell of the ball! So, do you love me? Hopefully enough for me to get to the Quarter Finals!”
Bluebell sings “Do You Love Me” by The Contours. She has a fun time dancing around the stage as she belts out this energetic bop. An additional clue shows an easy-bake oven, to which Bluebell states, “That’s a vegemite sandwich! It’s considered a delicacy where I was born.” The panelists guess Bluebell is Rose Byrne (Ken), Kylie Minogue (Rita), or Naomi Watts (Jenny).
Closing out this portion of the competition is Wasp. In his clue package he reveals, “Getting to the Group B finals makes me feel like a superhero underneath this Wasp armor. But in my life, there’s been one hero that I’ve admired most, and that’s my mother. She was creative and she loved costumes more than anything. She was my protector, fighting off invisible monsters under my bed. The neighborhood kids would try to steal my bike. As I got older, I started to see cracks in her armor and she faced her darkest battle yet. I tried everything I could to save her, but no amount of money, no amount of love could mend her broken wings. When she passed, I thought I’d never recover from the sting. I still feel it. I think about her all the time. Me being her would have brought so much so much joy to her. She probably would have tried to steal my costume and wear it herself. She would be so proud of me, but she wouldn’t want me to stop here. So tonight, this is for her. My Queen Bee.”
Wasp sings “Ain’t No Way” by Aretha Franklin. There’s only a certain caliber of singer able to tackle this anthem and Wasp proves he’s got the voice of a pro and a dynamic falsetto register. An additional clues shows an ATM shooting out $1 million bills, to which Wasp says, “Just like this bill, I’ve also hit a million.” The panelists guess Wasp is Mario (Rita), Craig David (Robin), Eric Benet (Robin), or Jason Derulo (Jenny).
Following the studio audience vote, one singer will be automatically eliminated tonight. The singer with the least amount of votes and unmasking first is Bluebell. Before she takes it off, the panelists submit the final guesses: Naomi Watts (Jenny), Isla Fisher (Robin), Rose Byrne (Ken), and Kylie Minogue (Rita). At last, Bluebell rips off that mask and proves them all wrong! It’s Grammy-nominated singer Natalie Imbruglia!
Next, Goo and Wasp throw down in a Battle Royale, each putting their own spin on Marvin Gaye‘s “I Heard it Through the Grapevine.” This was a close battle, but the winner is Wasp.
Before Goo unmasks, the panelists make their final guesses: Anthony Hamilton (Rita), Brian McKnight (Ken), Johnny Gill (Jenny), and Leon Bridges (Robin). Just as Goo is about to reveal himself, Jenny decides she can’t let him go and rings this season’s one and only Ding Dong Keep it On bell! That means there will be no safety net for Group C, and Goo moves on to this season’s Quarter Finals.
