Boras: Mets Chasing Free Agents Aggressively
The agent for Pete Alonso and Juan Soto said Wednesday that the Mets are clearly “pursuing it aggressively,” with the “it” being a World Series title through free agency, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
Scott Boras told reporters that Soto is prioritizing a team owner committed to “winning,” provided the money is there, too. Soto, the top free agent this offseason, is expected to strike a deal that could range from 10-15 years and be worth more than $600 million.
Boras kept things light with the media.
“The owners, the general managers, they are kind of called upon to be championship magicians,” he said. “It’s kind of what they’re asked to do. It’s hard to do, to put together that magic for the championship run, but behind every great magician obviously is the magic Juan.”
The Mets and Yankees are considered two of the top contenders for Soto’s services. The New York teams may also end up in a battle for Alonso.
Asked about Alonso, Boras had a quote ready: “There’s been a lot of talk about this being a ‘bear’ market for Alonso, but for Pete’s sake it’s the ‘polar’ opposite.”
Boras added that pitcher Sean Manaea had a “very vast” market, Puma reported.
On another of his clients, free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, Boras said he provides “an infusion of championship blood. He’s AB positive.”
