Stearns Talks Up Cohen’s Winning Desire
David Stearns had nice things to say about his boss Wednesday, offered clarity on the Mets’ catching situation and – news flash – said the Mets are looking to win the World Series in 2025 and for years to come. Also – bonus news flash – his focus is on the Mets and not “on the team that happens to be across the town.”
“I think Steve (Cohen’s) investment in our team is clear and his desire to win is clear and he’s been able to forge some really good relationships with players over the early part of his ownership tenure here,” Stearns told reporters. “And I think that is a huge benefit for our club.
“He wants to do that. He wants to understand who our players are, what makes them tick, what is important to them so that we can do everything we can to put them and their families in the best position to succeed. Steve has already demonstrated that throughout his ownership tenure here and I think he’ll continue to demonstrate that.”
The Mets are expected to have an interesting offseason coming off an 89-73 year that ended two wins short of the World Series. Pete Alonso is a free agent along with three-fifths of the starting rotation and the Mets may make a run at superstar Juan Soto.
Agent Scott Boras, who represents Alonso and Soto, addressed the media earlier Wednesday and said the Mets were “aggressively” chasing players in free agency in a bid to win a championship. Stearns was asked about Boras’ comments.
“I certainly think we are pursuing aggressively players that we believe will help us win a World Series not only this year, but for years to come,” Stearns said, smirking. He joked that it was “accurate” to say the Mets were trying to win a title and he was “being definitive” about that.
He was asked how he views competing with the Yankees for Soto.
“I think from my perspective I’m most focused on making the right decisions for the Mets regardless of what any of our other 29 teams are doing, including the team that happens to be across the town,” he said. “I think we have to make the right decisions for us, put ourselves in the best chance to compete continuously. That’s what I’m going to be focused on.”
He was also asked if the Mets were set with their catching duo of Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens.
“I would expect it,” he said. “I would expect so. In every position of the diamond, we’re always looking to upgrade, but I would say we’re comfortable with those two guys.”
