Coons: Voters 'didn't give us credit' for Biden administration's work
Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) said on Wednesday he did not think voters gave his party enough credit for the bipartisan legislation that was signed into law during the Biden administration.
In an interview with CNN’s Kasie Hunt, Coons, a close Biden ally, said he thought “it's still too early to know in great detail exactly what led to this electoral outcome."
“But from what I was seeing and what I was hearing, a big focus on the economy and inflation, and frankly, a lot of folks not recognizing the real progress that was by President Biden and Vice President Harris,” he continued.
“We've seen landmark bipartisan legislation signed into law the last couple of years that does important things that average Americans say they want: reducing prescription drug prices, for example, capping the price of insulin, investing in infrastructure, but they didn't feel it, and they didn't give us credit for it.”
During the first two years of Biden’s term in office, Democrats had a unified government and passed significant pieces of legislation, including a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill to repair the country’s roads, bridges and ports.
Biden's approval ratings have been underwater for most of his time in the White House, however, despite measures like the infrastructure bill receiving popular support.
Coons touted Biden’s record and said he would continue to champion the president's vision of politics going forward.
“There's a lot to do in his remaining weeks, and I know that he is hopeful that the legacy of the progress he's made overseas and strengthening our alliances here at home, in investing in the middle class have some chance of continuing and moving forward,” Coons said of Biden.
“And I'm going to continue to both defend his record and advocate for his style of politics, his belief in the middle class in rebuilding our country and our economy from the bottom up and the middle out, and in fighting for a bipartisan vision of how we can come together and make a difference for the country and the world.”
