Two Spurs stars make Deeney’s Premier League Team of the Week
All of the Spurs players can be lauded for their performances after a monumental win against Aston Villa. Troy Deeney selected two of Tottenham’s stand-out performers for his Team of the Week.
Everyone deserves praise
Tottenham have earned some deserved recognition this week after a performance against Aston Villa to which so many players contributed.
The four goals scored make Tottenham the highest-scoring team in the Premier League so far and in spite of going 0-1 down in the first half, limited Aston Villa to that goal being their only shot on target.
Son and Johnson combined for a goal while Kulusevski picked up his fifth assist of the season. Pape Matar Sarr followed on from his wonderful strike against City with a domineering performance in midfield and Ben Davies, who was asked to come off the bench again, made a vital interception that set up Tottenham’s second goal.
However, Troy Deeney selected two Spurs individuals in particular for their showing against Villa to make his Premier League Team of the Week.
Radu Dragusin and Dominic Solanke selected
In his Team of the Week column, Troy Deeney selected Radu Drǎgușin and Dominic Solanke for his chosen XI.
Praising Drǎgușin’s performance, Deeney said (BBC Sport): “I think he was superb coming into a new partnership with Cristian Romero because Micky van de Ven was injured – and then Romero went off too. Dragusin equipped himself well against a very good Aston Villa team and didn’t put a foot wrong.”
Solanke was a more expected addition to the Team of the Week with two goals and an assist, but Deeney wanted to credit him after previously criticising the Spurs striker.
He added: “I have been giving him a bit of stick because I’m not sure if he is the man who will score enough goals to take Tottenham all the way to where they want to be, but he was really good in the win over Villa. When I give people stick I also look to give them praise and credit.
“His goals were two proper poacher’s finishes. He was much better and played on the last man, didn’t come short and get involved. He was always available for a cross and got his just rewards. Hopefully, he can continue and start firing Tottenham to where they want to be.”
Two players contributing exactly how they were intended to
Drǎgușin has had to be patient in waiting for opportunities at Tottenham. However, after his error against Qarabag in the Europa League, he has put in two excellent performances showing precisely why he was brought to the club.
Micky van de Ven and Romero will naturally end up missing games across a season and Drǎgușin has now stood up to two of the sternest tests he may face and shown how he can be relied upon in the toughest circumstances.
While the goals were well taken, this was another showing from Solanke which demonstrated his role as the first line of Tottenham’s defence. Postecoglou has continuously praised Solanke’s overall work where his pressing makes Tottenham’s attack so potent. The fact he was able to complement another excellent overall display with two goals is a delight.
