'Mitch McConnell is why': Rage mounts as Trump victory looks more likely
As former President Donald Trump drew closer to reclaiming the White House — despite a criminal conviction, authoritarian threats against "enemies," former allies who reported he praised Nazis, signs of cognitive decline and a running mate who says people without children are sociopaths — his critics cast angry glares at one person.
"Reminder that Trump would just be an angry retiree shouting at the TV right now had [Sen.] Mitch McConnell decided to do the right thing after 1/6," New Yorker staff writer Susan Glasser wrote on X. "Amazing."
Mother Jones voting rights reporter Ari Berman gave a more detailed explanation about his outrage at the Republican Senate minority leader's response to the U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump's supporters tried to overturn President Joe Biden's victory with violence.

"If Mitch McConnell had used his power to lobby Republicans to convict Trump on impeachment charges after Jan 6," wrote Berman, "he never would have been able to run for president again."
These words of condemnation came as spirits rose at Mar-a-Lago, the Florida club and mansion where Trump stood accused of hoarding top secret documents in a haphazard fashion in a ballroom, bathroom and shower.
A new book recently revealed to what extent McConnell is not a Trump fan, reportedly calling the former president “stupid as well as being ill-tempered."
"I’ll just say it," said conservative Florida attorney Ben Newman, "F--- you, Mitch McConnell."
McConnell face criticism throughout the day as political spectators such as New Yorker contributor Zach Borstein asked themselves why the driving force behind the deadly "Stop the Steal" rally was even allowed to run.
