Trump wins key Maine congressional district
Former President Trump has won the one Electoral College vote Maine’s 2nd Congressional District carries, according to a Decision Desk HQ projection, giving the Republican a potentially critical vote in an election that could come down to the wire.
Maine distributes its four electoral votes based on both the statewide result and the winner of each of its two congressional districts. The statewide winner gets two, and each congressional district winner gets one additional vote.
While Maine is considered a Democratic-leaning state, its 2nd Congressional District is more up for grabs and has leaned toward Republicans in recent years. It voted for Trump in both 2016 and 2020, while the state as a whole voted for the Democratic candidate.
Not much polling had been done on the district ahead of Election Day, but most analysts rated it as at least leaning toward voting for Trump again. Trump’s win in the district could be particularly critical if the election comes down to a difference of just a few electoral votes.
