Tommy asked Sarah if she’d ever consider returning to the series as a full time cast member. She said no! But she’d be open to doing a “fun arc” without being locked in to every episode.
She responded, “That would be a no. I would come and do a fun arc but being locked in, in that world again, I’m doing too many other things that I am really excited about. And I feel like I really got to tell her story and I feel proud of April’s story and her journey. I would love to hop back in and say hello, the door is always open but in terms of a long term contract, I don’t think so. I think I did it.”
And about the headlines she made calling her firing “mean and unjust,” she said, “You know what’s ridiculous…I was telling a silly story about clickbait headlines, about one thing I said in an interview that became a headline everywhere and in the telling of the story it became clickbait again. Hollywood is going to Hollywood. I went back to my trailer and I had person after person knocking on my door hugging me. Two days after that I had four test offers for four different leads in four different pilots sitting on my desk. Fans organized a plane to fly over and say how much they love me and [my co-star Jessica Capshaw]. If the pain hadn’t happened, that love wouldn’t have been so epic.”
She continued, “I was so overwhelmed with gratitude inside that loss that when Shonda and Betsey called to say, ‘We love you and are so sad to say goodbye but we love you forever,’ I wept on the phone with them and just couldn’t think of anything except an outpouring of gratitude because of all the things I learned and how I had grown and the gift of the show – that was genuine. It wasn’t me trying to kiss anyone’s ass. I was raised to hunt for the good in moments of pain.”
“Yes, it was a big grief. It was a big pain. There is no getting around it. Yes it was painful, but it was so heart expanding,” she added.
