It’s also been considered one of the best Netflix France’s hits, sitting alongside highly rated films like Lupin.
In fact, Under Paris is now considered the second biggest non-English film in Netflix history.
The film was a hit over the summer, and coincided with the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The plot follows a scientist’s attempt to warn and prevent a major bloodbath in the Seine, the river that winds through the heart of Paris, as a giant shark roams its waters.
Filming for the follow up is set to start next year, as one of the film’s stars revealed in a recent interview.
Actress Bérénice Bejo confirmed to La Tribune that a sequel is happening. She said: “In September 2025, we will shoot Under Paris 2 [Sous La Seine 2].
“It will not be a simple sequel. It is another film, very different… but still with a shark.”
She also added that the movie’s success brought with it some odd benefits as she explained: “It brought me some special requests: Anne Hidalgo [the mayor of Paris] asked me to jump into the Seine with her. I declined.
“She also asked me if she had been the model for the mayor’s character. It’s more of a mix of her and Valérie Pécresse.”
Director Xavier Gens had previously excited fans by hinting that a sequel to the Netflix hit could be coming.
In an interview with Variety over the summer, he said: “Right now, as of today, we’re not on it, but there’s a chance that we’ll be discussing it soon.
“If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water.”
Netflix is yet to comment on the forthcoming sequel, but fans are already excited for a second film.
Writing on X, one film fan posted: “Very interesting movie, last 25-30 minutes were very thrilling. I’d watch a sequel.”
Another shared: “I didn’t think I was going to like Under Paris AT ALL and now I’m praying for a sequel.”
“Well I just watched Under Paris I think it’s an awesome movie. I love the ending and although it’s definitely not possible to happen but the idea of it is insanely good.
“Honestly I am ready for a sequel,” wrote a third.
