IRFC reports over half of Afghanistan’s population requires urgent humanitarian aid
The International Federation of Red Crescent (IFRC) has reported that Afghanistan continues to face prolonged and complex humanitarian crises.
In its latest report, released on Tuesday, November 5, IFRC stated that approximately 23.7 million people, more than half of Afghanistan’s population, are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
According to the report, repeated natural disasters, the growing impact of climate change, population displacement, economic challenges, and food insecurity are the main factors contributing to Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The organization also highlighted the severe economic crisis in Afghanistan, noting that more than half of Afghan households are experiencing economic shocks.
The report emphasizes that Afghanistan’s economy heavily relies on foreign aid and remittances, which have significantly declined since the political change in 2021.
In a previous report, IFRC mentioned that a total of $6.7 billion in aid has been sent to Afghanistan since the Taliban administration took power.
The organization also pointed to Afghanistan’s vulnerability to earthquakes, reporting that nearly 400 earthquakes, including significant ones like the 6.3-magnitude quake in Herat in October 2023, have been recorded over the past three years.
The report notes that Afghanistan lacks sufficient capacity to respond to natural disasters, which further compounds the challenges fueling the country’s humanitarian crisis.
The continued lack of resilience to natural disasters and economic dependency on foreign aid highlights Afghanistan’s need for sustainable solutions. Long-term strategies are crucial to improve its capacity to handle crises and reduce reliance on external support.
With the humanitarian needs mounting, international support remains essential. However, Afghanistan’s complex challenges also call for a collaborative global response focused on stability, economic recovery, and disaster preparedness.
