Afghanistan Saffron secures over $1 million deal, gains global spotlight at 2024 Paris exhibition
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a contract for the sale of 600 kilograms of Afghanistan saffron at the 2024 Paris exhibition, valued at over one million dollars.
On Monday, November 4, USAID reported that this order will help elevate Afghanistan’s saffron position in global markets and improve the livelihoods of the people in Afghanistan.
In its statement, USAID highlighted that “Afghanistan saffron has attracted major buyers’ attention at global exhibitions.”
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce emphasized that saffron cultivation has expanded to 26 provinces following the ban on opium poppy cultivation.
According to the ministry’s statistics, Afghanistan exported 67 tons of saffron last year, valued at 49 million dollars, to nine countries.
Previously, Afghanistan saffron received the “Three Golden Stars” award from the International Taste Institute in Brussels, Belgium, recognizing its quality.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce sees the increased saffron production as a positive shift towards sustainable agriculture, reducing dependency on illicit crops.
The USAID-supported deal also represents an opportunity for Afghan farmers to access more international markets, providing a stable source of income.
The success of Afghanistan saffron in international markets could pave the way for economic growth in Afghanistan, supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing the country’s reliance on poppy cultivation.
As Afghanistan saffron continues to gain global recognition, collaborations like this could foster long-term economic stability, enhancing Afghanistan’s agricultural sector and offering a promising future for farmers.
