Free guided culture tours in Nicosia district
Exciting new ways to discover the tales of Nicosia and its suburbs arrive this season as Nicosia 2030 in collaboration with the European HUB-IN organises a series of guided tours and cultural routes this weekend and throughout the next two months in Lympia, Palaichori and Nicosia.
The free tours kick off on Saturday and Sunday with events in Lympia and Palaichori. In Nicosia, the tours will happen the following weekend and until early December. The initiative aims at introducing different aspects and stories of Nicosia’s neighbourhoods and villages, following a fully booked and very successful previous edition.
The guided tours/cultural routes are carried out in collaboration with several organisations: the Paleochori Community Council of Morphou, Paleochori Regional Primary School, Parents’ Association of the Regional Primary School of Paleochori, Lympia Primary School, Friends of Nicosia, Tour Guides, historians, teachers and the People of Cyprus Group.
Arriving first is The Stone of Lymbia tour this Saturday, leaving from the Lymbia Lithosculpture Museum at 3pm. This will be a village walk dedicated to the stone of Lympia to get to know the traditional architecture and its craftsmen. On Sunday, an 11am walk titled Knowing Palaichori will take place introducing the most important parts of the village with its many important historical monuments and sights. Participants will meet at the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in the morning.
Next weekend, two more walks will take place. The My Nicosia – From Its Multicultural Past to its Intercultural Future will set off from Paphos Gate at 3pm, exploring the city’s history and its not-so-well-known neighbourhoods, shops, organisations and people. On Sunday, November 17, the coffee-focused walk In the footsteps of Hovoli will take participants through Nicosia’s café society starting from Eleftheria Square at 11am.
Another walk in Lympia will happen on November 23 at 2.30pm titled The Neighbourhood of the Lympia Primary School, led by school children introducing participants to their neighbourhood. At 3pm, the Walk for Board and Screen will kick off from the Nicosia Municipal Gardens at 3pm, sharing figures and places that contributed to the evolution of the Cypriot theatre and the spread of the art of cinema in the city.
On November 24, the Knowing the City walk will explore the area of Chrysaliniotissa and parts of Ayios Kassianos and how they have changed over the centuries and the efforts made to revitalise the area under the Nicosia Unified Regulatory Plan. This will be a morning walk, beginning at 11am from Famagusta Gate.
Finally, on December 8, an interactive walk for adults, Nicosia Unified Regulatory Plan: Walking towards a united Nicosia, will take place at 11am all about experiencing life in a united Nicosia in the 20th century, through important milestones of the NURP. Participants will meet at the Home of Cooperation, opposite Ledra Palace.
