Investigation underway after homecoming party shooting in Stillwater
STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — Over a hundred people had gathered for a homecoming party in Stillwater over the weekend when bullets started flying.
The Stillwater Police Department was called White Barn Estates around 1 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving a call saying someone had been shot.
"Officers were out on a very hectic scene. Several people were trying to leave the the big party that was going on there," said Lieutenant TJ Low. "Officers were able to determine that there was four other additional gunshot victims, as well as a few others that were injured just from trying to get away from the scene or shrapnel from like broken glass, stuff like that."
Police said the four people shot were taken to a local hospital and treated with non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooter ran from the scene.
"I know that there was people that were taking pictures like videographers at the party that our detectives are working with to try to get some of that footage to maybe to get a suspect or suspects pictures from that," said Low.
Students on campus said homecoming weekend in Stillwater is usually safe for everyone.
"I'm pretty surprised that there was a shooting just because it's a college town. I mean, you typically don't hear stuff like that happening in a college town," said Gavin Fields
Students said the parties near campus can become more risky with the amount of people that will attend.
"If you had a party with like 100 people and you don't know all of them, you don't know what their intentions are," said Fields.
Knowing some of the victims were current OSU students has left their classmates on edge with questions.
"I've never heard of it happening. But I am interested in knowing more about it, who was involved," said Fields.
OSU Officials sent News 4 the following statement:
Oklahoma State University is aware of an off-campus shooting early Sunday morning that involved victims who are OSU students. We are thankful the injuries were not life-threatening and are reaching out to our students to provide support and resources. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Stillwater Police Department.
