Spurs star admits he has been studying Heung-min Son’s game for years
One Tottenham star has revealed that he used to try and pick things up from Heung-min Son’s game even prior to his switch to the North London club.
Spurs star’s growing importance
Brennan Johnson has gone from a player who was written off as a flop earlier this season to now being one of the first names on Ange Postecoglou‘s teamsheet.
The Wales international has repaid the manager’s faith, having found the back of the net on six occasions already so far this season.
The 23-year-old has now revealed that when he was younger, he tried to model his game on Son‘s and would watch the South Korean very closely.
Brennan Johnson’s confession about Heung-min Son
Johnson admitted that he is still in awe of some of Son‘s attributes, including the Tottenham captain’s ability to get shots away with both feet.
When asked who he looked up to while growing up, Johnson told BBC Sport: “I used to play kind of more midfield (as a youngster). So I liked watching old videos of Kaka, Zidane, and those types of players.
“Even before I came to Spurs, I used to always watch Sonny. Not too many videos of him specifically, but whenever Tottenham played, I always watched him. Even now, I find it amazing how two-footed he is, and watching it first-hand is amazing.”
When asked if Son is aware that he idolised him, Johnson responded: “I don’t know if he is too aware. I haven’t told him anything too particular, but I think he probably knows, the way I ask him questions and reach out to him sometimes if there are goals that he has scored or on his positions, or just little things. He’d understand that I respect him highly as a player.”
Son is the perfect role model
Son is the perfect player for Johnson to mould his game on as the South Korean is extremely intelligent with his moment and has found a way to maximise his impact in the final third as he gained more experience.
The 32-year-old is also extremely cool and composed in front of goal, which is a trait that Johnson is now starting to develop as well.
