Mets Decline RHP Phil Maton’s 2025 Option
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Mets decline RHP Phil Maton‘s $7.75 option for the 2025 season, making him a free agent. Instead, they will pay him a $250K buyout.
It’s not much of a surprise for Maton, who had an up-and-down go with the Mets. New York acquired the bullpen arm from the Tampa Bay Rays in early July for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Maton had a strong regular season in Queens, pitching to a fine 2.51 ERA between July and September in 28 ⅔ innings. He struck out 30 batters, allowed six walks and surrendered just one home run on 18 hits and eight earned runs.
However, things took a turn in the postseason. Across six games, Maton allowed eleven hits, six earned runs, four home runs, walked four and struck out six. His ERA ballooned to 8.53 in his fourth October appearance. The highest postseason ERA he ever posted prior was 2.70 in 2020 when he was with Cleveland.
Maton joins Ryne Stanek, Brooks Raley, Adam Ottavino and Drew Smith as the staples departing the Mets’ bullpen in free agency this year.
