Frank Lampard highlights one Spurs weakness despite 4-1 victory
Frank Lampard says that despite Tottenham’s dominant win over Aston Villa on Sunday, one glaring weakness needs to be addressed quickly by Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham’s defensive record
One narrative continues to be pushed by the media this season – Spurs are weak defensively. However, that is certainly not borne out by the numbers.
Tottenham have the joint third-best defensive record in the Premier League so far this season and have not tended to give up many chances to the opposition.
That is an area that Ange Postecoglou’s men have markedly improved since last season, but Lampard believes that one weakness continues to cost them at the back.
Pundits highlight Guglielmo Vicario’s weakness
Lampard suggested that Vicario’s lack of decisiveness will continue to be exploited by other sides, pointing out that the goalkeeper was unbalanced for Villa’s opening goal.
The former Chelsea midfielder told Premier League Productions (03/11/24): “I just felt the goalkeeper allowed himself to be so unbalanced through the movement of it.
“He will understand that he will be getting it in every game now. People are going to get in your way, so Tottenham, it’s certainly a weakness that they haven’t quite put right.”
Lampard’s claims on Vicario were backed up by other pundits as well, with Matt Holland also suggesting that the Spurs number one was distracted by the bodies around him.
The former Charlton man said: “Vicario, not the most dominant of goalkeepers. Doesn’t come off his line. It’s a flat delivery to the near post, Spurs don’t deal with it.
“Vicario gets involved with Rogers on the line, distracted by him. Does make a decent save but Rogers has the simplest of tasks, tapping in from two yards.”
Vicario seems panicked from set-pieces
It would be harsh to blame that goal on Vicario as he certainly could not have come out to claim such a flat cross to the near post.
The 28-year-old also did make a reaction save from point-blank range and was unfortunate that the ball went straight to Mogan Rodgers.
However, it is true that the Italian seems agitated and panicked every time the opposition gets a corner. He certainly does not exude calm, which one would want the goalkeeper to do.
